What You Should Do When Experiencing Internet Connection Issues

Every office relies on its internet connection, so when the internet is not working, it can have detrimental and costly effects for your business. Fortunately, troubleshooting the internet connection can be a simple task. Look at these quick tips when your Wi-Fi is lagging to get back to optimum connection speed. Before looking at the Wi-Fi router, look at the Wi-Fi icon on your devices. A glance will show if you have connected to the internet or not. If yes, the internet may be the issue. If not, the internet or Wi-Fi could be causing lack of access.

Clicking on the Wi-Fi icon will show an internet connection “map” or list – this will look different depending on the device’s operating system. The window will show where connections occur. You should see whether the device is picking up the Wi-Fi signal or connecting to the internet. Click on a stage of connection to perform a troubleshoot from your computer. If this method comes to no result, the modem or router could be causing the problems.

The most effective way to determine whether your problem is an internet or Wi-Fi issue is plugging directly into the router.

What if your internet is not working

If you are in the router range and have all the correct passwords and permissions, follow these simple steps to troubleshoot if your internet is still not working.

Test on a different device

Test your connection on a different device, such as a smartphone, and connect it to the network. If the test device connects, your internet’s problem could be with the original device experiencing the issue. The bandwidth and speed could be interfered with by the use of multiple devices being used at the same time. If multiple devices are using the internet simultaneously, this could be part of the problem.

If you find the problem is your device, try these tips:

  1. Make sure the device’s Wi-Fi is on. If you are using a computer, there will be a button that you can press to turn the Wi-Fi on and off manually. If the computer’s Wi-Fi is off, switch it on and try to connect again. If you are using a smartphone, go to the device’s settings, and connect to Wi-Fi there.
  2. If connecting to the internet is still an issue, try to reboot your device. Many times, a simple case of switching your device on and off will solve problems as this allows the device to reset.
  3. If restarting your device does not resolve the issue, go to the network preferences to sign into the correct network. Make sure to enter the valid password. Make sure to enter the password carefully and slowly to ensure the symbols and characters are right. It is essential to ensure the caps lock isn’t on as passwords are case-sensitive.
  4. If the username and password is correctly entered, the connectivity issues may be related to signal strength. Look at the bars beside the name of the network. Are there full bars? If there are a few bars, the signal strength may be weak. Move closer to the router and try again.
  5. Run a network diagnostics and setup Wizard. If the device is a PC, right-click the network icon in the notification area and select “Troubleshoot Problems” and follow the wizard’s steps. If the device is a Mac, go to the Apple menu in the top-left corner and select “Network,” then select “Assist Me” and then click “Diagnostics.” Once the network diagnostics window is open, go through the steps as follows.
  6. As a final step, temporarily turn off the firewall and other security features and try again to get online. If this works, there is something wrong with the firewall. You will need to contact technical support to determine the issue. Browsing the internet without a firewall is dangerous, and we highly recommend against it as it can leave you susceptible to malicious attacks.

Check your router and modem.

The wireless router will have a series of icons that represent different things. If you are unsure of the meanings, grab the user manual to determine what the symbols mean. It is essential to pay attention to the sign that designates connection to the internet. If that light is not on, the Wi-Fi isn’t offering an internet connection. If it is on, the internet service isn’t working. Before doing anything else, restart the router and modem. It may have temporarily hit a bug or malfunctioned, and a quick reboot will fix this.

Reconnect to the Wi-Fi network

If there is anything sitting on top of the router, try moving it, so it isn’t blocked. If you have thick walls, the signal strength may be compromised. Make sure to keep your modem in an open space. If restarting your router and modem does not work, it is time to move on to the next step.

Scan for viruses

Viruses can affect the Wi-Fi signal. Do a scan for viruses or malware that could be affecting your ability to connect to the internet. Specific devices such as Windows 10 provide a virus scanner; if your device does not have such software, don’t worry. There are applications you can download that also do the job.

Call the service provider

If your router indicates a connection, but you cannot get on the internet, your device may display a message such as “no connection.” In this case, call the company and let them know you cannot access the internet. The operator may take you through a troubleshooting process, or you may discover there is an outage in your area. If the internet provider gives you instructions, make sure to follow them correctly. Hopefully, the operator will then return your connection. Internet outages do occur, and you may be left without connection for a couple of hours. Many service providers compensate customers when an outage occurs by offering credit on the next bill.

We hope that you will get your internet back up and running in no time with the steps above.
